Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
